I think it's interesting that it's usually a white kid who snaps out. As a Caucasian-American I have seen some really disturbing trends over my lifetime among people who look like me.
1) After the race-related riots in the 1960's, many white people moved out to the suburbs and the reason they gave for the migration is that they wanted to be safe. However, what they didn't realize is that the suburban form is very isolating. As a result, many people suffer from social/emotional problems from the physical isolation they experience. More needs to be done to support mental health and encourage balanced emotional people in the U.S. Lots of kids are left alone because both parents or a single mother works, and this is not good for emotional health.
2) Gun lobbyists and our 2nd Amendment to the Constitution seem to make it impossible to keep semi-automatic weapons out of the hands of emotionally disturbed people. This makes no sense, but this is America. Apparently guns are a part of our national identity.
3) Mental health resources have eroded to the point that there really are not any. State hospitals have closed. People are on their own for taking their medication, and when they stop taking the medication, there is no one to provide oversight. Families are stretched beyond what they can reasonably handle with family members that have mental and emotional disturbances. We are at the breaking point.
4) The media glorifies violence. They always say that it doesn't cause people to snap, but I believe that this is not true. Hollywood is a big business and there is reluctance to limit "freedom of speech."
Here's an interesting article linking these killing sprees to the victims of bullying. If no adults ever protected a kid at home and at school, that would explain why they would snap. The article also lists warning signs, in case you are concerned about someone's behavior.
What do I think? It would take a long time to write in Spanish what I want to say here. I am a citizen of the USA and I am very ashamed of my society and culture. We have become profoundly shallow (I use this oxymoron for effect) in the way we live our lives. Each one of us has the power to control how we live and how we react to our fellow humans. I for one choose to look for more edifying models in the long records of wisdom that are available so easily now. Do I need to list them. You are all intelligent people and you know the list does not include pop culture, movies, the inane babble of entertainers, or television shows. These things are here for our entertainment and amusement during rest. Our work of becoming good human beings needs far more than periods of rest. We must first have a sense of self worth and we must also have a desire to spread good will and love to those we meet. In the words of a familiar phrase to be "a blessing to everyone I meet". For us in the USA, we must stop our belief in guns as the solution to all our problems. Unfortunately our founding fathers thought the right to bear arms was something of utmost importance. I submit that such a view really belongs to a part of history that is no longer relevant. But since e e cummings said, "A politician is an arse upon which has sat everything but a man", we will continue to supply deadly force to the insane as a sacred right.
