normal ( nohr-mahl' )

adjective ( normal, usual, regular )

Francobollo is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

How to post a picture

1. No es normal que haga tanto calor en Diciembre, ¿será el calentamiento global?

It's not normal for it to be so hot in December, could it be global warming?

2. Trabajando día y noche en la cosecha de las uvas y la producción de vino, Ramón comenzó a sentirse más normal. Ya no pensaba tanto en Claudia ni en lo que pudiera haber sido.

Working day and night on harvesting the grapes and making wine, Ramón began to feel more normal. He no longer thought of Claudia that often nor of what could have been.

Notes:

The 2nd example sentence is part of our special new Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on December 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

The sentence is perfect, but it makes more sense if you add the personal pronoun: Yo soy normal (the Spanish subject pronouns serve exactly for that: contrasting: I-vs-others) - cogumela, Dec 15, 2012
Thanks, cogumela! I can see it would add a good emphasis to the "I". Like most English speakers, I have tobe careful not to overuse it, though. We tend to be "yo-yos". :)) - Noetol, Dec 15, 2012
Thanks, Cogumela! It adds emphasis to the "I". I have to be careful not to overuse it, though. Can't be a yo-yo! :)) - Noetol, Dec 15, 2012

".. can be considered..". The word 'considerated' doesn't exist in English. 'considerate' is an adjective, not a verb, which means 'thoughtful/helpful'. Hope this helps! - Aardvark, Dec 16, 2012

Ya sé que llorando durante funerales es bastante normal, pero siempre llevo gafas del sol para esconder mis lágrimas.

With Franco's corrections: Ya sé que llorar en los funerales es bastante normal, pero siempre llevo gafas del sol para esconder mis lágrimas.

I know that crying at funerals is quite normal, but I always wear sunglasses to hide my tears.

Creo que en verdad, ser normal es una ilusión, porque ¿quién decide lo que es 'normal' y lo que no?

I think that in reality, being normal is an illusion, because who decides what is 'normal' and what isn't?

No es normal quedar en casa los viernes por la noche

It´s not normal to stay at home on Friday evenings.

OK, I know the above is simple and uncreative, but it reminds me of something I´ve been wanting to learn. How does one correctly say -- On Friday nights. On Sunday mornings. On weekday evenings. ???

I know ¨On Fridays¨ is ¨los viernes¨ but I don´t know which part or parts are made plural in Spanish when you add a time of day, such as mornings-evenings-nights etc.

I´d love to have it explained.

Thanks.

Roger
