I'm trying to write a paper for Spanish class about Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. I want to say that they were "as different as night and day." How do I say this in Spanish? Do I translate it directly, or is there an idiomatic expression I can use?

Ser polos opuestos

Ser como la noche y el día (I prefer the first one, because it's less literal)

... tan diferentes como el agua y el aceite. (Think about when you have a hot pan with oil and you pour some water, or when you pour oil in a glass of water and they never really mix together, that is the science behind this phrase)

I made it up, don't take it too seriously, although, I think it might work.. - annierats, Dec 14, 2012

"No a todos el mismo" Not at all the same

"Exactos opuestos" Exact opposites

"Como negro and blanco" Like black and white
