emprender ( ehm-pren-der' )

verb ( to undertake, to embark on )

Francobollo is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

How to post a picture

1. Carolina emprendió la remodelación de su casa sola y sin saber nada de la construcción y la decoración.

Carolina undertook the remodeling of her house all alone and without knowing anything about construction and decoration.

2. Tras ser rechazado por Claudia, Ramón dejó todo atrás y emprendió un viaje a Latinoamérica para despejar su mente.

After being rejected by Claudia, Ramón left everything behind and embarked on a trip to Latin America to clear his mind.

Notes:

The 2nd example sentence is part of our special new Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on December 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

The large colourful butterflies, called Painted Ladies, migrate to UK each summer. The whole journey, a pehenomenal 9,000 mile round trip from tropical Africa to the Arctic Circle, is not undertaken by individual butterflies but is a series of steps by up to six successive generations. Painted Ladies returning to Africa in the autumn are thus several generations removed from their ancestors who left Africa earlier in the year.

It's a bit unusual to refer to a motto, but 'emprender' reminds me of William of Orange, also known as the Taciturn:

" Hope is not necessary to engagement, nor success to perseverance. "

( But he spoke these words in French: Point n'est besoin d'espérer pour entreprendre, ni de réussir pour persévérer.)

I often wonder why some people decide to undertake learning how to become an undertaker. I would find it difficult.

Muchas veces pienso por qué algunas personas emprenden aprender como a ser un agenteuna carerra de empleado funerario. Para mí seria difícil.

La vida en España es muy difícil en este momento, y para obtener dinero que permita emprender un nuevo proyecto , hay que pensar si uno tiene algo de valor, como un coche . Hoy en día los españoles empeñan hasta el coche para conseguir préstamos.

Life in Spain is difficult just now and in order to raise money to embark on a new venture, one must think if one owns anything of value, such as a car. These days the Spaniards pledge anything, including the car in order to raise money.
