Who, what, or where am I? #48

Question

We continue with an animal, one that looks like a cross between an otter, a bear and a monkey.
What am I and where is my natural habitat? Name at least 2 typical physical characteristics of me.

I am indeed a Kinkajou (Potos flavus), a.k.a. honeybear, rolled-tail bear and nightwalker. I am nocturnal and arboreal (I live in trees).

My habitat: the warm, humid lowland rainforests of Central and South America, from east Mexico down to South Brazil.

Hispanohablantes have many different names for me, amongst which mico de noche, oso mielero, mico leon, martucha, martilla, cuchicuchi, ...

Physical characteristics:
- my long tongue (up to 20 cm) with which I can extract honey from flowers (hence my nickname 'honeybear')
- my long, prehensive, grasping tail that is usually rolled up, that I can use as an extra 'hand' when climbing trees
- rather long fingers
- I can turn my hind feet backwards so that my clawed toes enable me to descend head-first
- my front-paws are bare-skinned. I tend to 'wash my food' just like raccoons, to whom I am related
- scent glands on my face, throat and abdomen, as we kinkajous communicate with each other by scent-marking

My main diet consists of fruit and nectar.
My ecological role in the rainforest is that of pollinator and seed disperser.
But alas: my status in the wild is heavily threatened due to deforestation and fur hunting and ...

people's unstoppable need for exotic pets. One stupid famous person who 'promoted' us as pets was Paris Hilton ;-( Until I bit that person, of course, then I was quickly dumped.

Somebody already mentioned that you are a marsupial (you didn't deny or confirm that point) and since you're asking what or where is your habitat, I should ask this: Is your natural habitat in any tropical forest of America? (Which should be true)

No tengo ni idea, pero estos marsupiales son hermosos. Si no fueran tan agresivos, serían las mascotas perfectas.

I have no clue, but these marsupials are way too cute. If they weren't so aggressive, I'm sure they would make great pets.

People have been domesticizing so many animal species that aren't suited for that or that are seriously threatened ;-( - mcl020, Dec 3, 2012
