Your sentence is nearly correct; you just need to add a couple of tildes and punctuation marks:
¿Qué día es hoy? What day (of the week) is it today?
Hoy es lunes. Today is Monday.
¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy? What is today's date?
Hoy es el tres de diciembre. Today is the third of December.

Si quiere decir ¿cúal es la fecha?, también se dice "¿A cuántos estamos?"
