moderno ( moh-der'-noh )

adjective ( modern )

Francobollo is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

How to post a picture

1. A mi me encanta el arte moderno con sus colores salvajes y temas abstractos que representan un sinnúmero de cosas.

I love modern art with it's wild colors and abstract themes that represent countless things.

2. Claudia es una mujer moderna y exitosa. Trabaja como abogada en un bufete muy conocido y está a punto de hacerse socia.

Claudia is a modern and successful woman. She's a lawyer at a well-known law firm and she's about to be named partner.

Notes

The 2nd example sentence is part of our special new Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on December 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Things that are modern nowadays will become ordinary in the future. For example, the very first sms was sent in December twenty years ago. Its text was: "Merry Christams". Since that time sending messages has become normal. And why 160 signs? According to research on everyday communication, 160 signs are enough to express what the person wants to say.

In the modern world opportunities are better for women, but still not as good as they should be.

El arte moderno muchas veces no tiene sentido para nadie más que su creador.

A lot of times modern art doesn't make sense to anyone besides its creator.

Computadoras, telivisiónes, videojuegos... Dudo que nadie pudiera imaginar lo que una persona moderna llama "común".

Computers, TV's, videogames... I doubt anyone could conceive of what a modern person simply regards as "commonplace".

The benefits of modern technology are so many. Starting from surfing the internet for researching and studying, sending and receiving email messages, or buying and selling stuff on line…have helped everyone to be more productive and consume time, but our kids have become less active, that’s why the number of obise children have been rising worldwide.
