Estoy or Esta?

I have heard different things from different people. Are Estoy and Esta interchangeable?

Quite simply, no they are not. They are the Spanish equivalent of "I am" and "you are", assuming that you mean estoy and está.
Está also can mean "he, she, or it is", so it could have multiple functions, but it cannot be used with "I".
