Use "lo" for masculine noun and "la" for the feminine ones, and it's the same as our "it."

You'd use "it" when you've mentioned the noun, and it's no longer necessary to repeat (just as we use "it" in English)

When the command is positive you connect the pronoun to the end of the command

Lea la receta = (usted) read the recipe

Léala

When it's a negative command, you place it after no and before the verb

No hierva el agua = don't boil the water

No la hierva

also los and las for the plural nouns ;) - Kiwi-Girl, Nov 28, 2012
By the way "el agua" is a femenine noun which is why I used "la" there. - QFour, Nov 28, 2012

And if there is both an indirect object pronoun, and a direct object pronoun, then the indirect comes first

Dímelo - Tell me (it) or Tell it to me.

Démelas - Give them to me.
