Expressing numerals eg 1978 in Spanish

Question

How do you say 1978 in Spanish please?

In English it is structured 'nineteen seventy eight' but is it the same structure in spanish? Would I say diecinueve setenta y ocho? Do I need to add in 'sigla' to indicate context?

Right - I won't add it in this case, it is a reading from a text checking on pronounciation which starts " En 1978 Don Modesto instituye su escuela........." Thanks for your help.
