Communicating Differences in Regional Spanish in "La Palabra del Día"

The Spanishdict.com stand on Spanish suggestions is we like them. Members in the past have been English speaking and there weren’t many Spanish suggestions. Now we have more Spanish speakers and their input is valuable and desired as long as debates and arguments that hurt the members do not enter into the forum.

Indicating a suggestion and then indicating a separate, different, and opposing suggestion is fine. Continued discrepancies, differences, and debates are disruptive to the learning process of the forum. The forum is for learning and teaching, not hashing out a difference of opinion in cultural or regional differences.

Spanish suggestions in La Palabra del Día are encouraged and desired. The corrector (who is presently Francobollo) is the official corrector and any changes he indicates are to be corrected by the poster. When a member is so upset by a cultural or regional difference, personal messages can be directed to the Moderators, but really adapting to culture is one of the things that life is about.

Too bad that you've decided to post this without first discussing it with your fellow Moderators. That's really bad policy, but since you put it out there publicly, I provide my opinion.

If I had been asked I would have said that "Too many cooks spoil the soup." Specifically, I have been a moderator for a few years now and have seen many great correctors (four that I can thing of) stop correcting threads because they don't want the hassle of another person questioning, adding to, or challenging corrections. It's just not worth it for them.

At least on the forum I've been moderating the official corrector was the only corrector --- not sure where you got your new "rule" ---but this existing rule was the one that worked beautifully.

If someone has a question about corrections made by any native speaker, let him/her open a new thread, but let's not have a "Battle of the Corrections" on our forum.

As far as this post, it appears you'll do as you please...and so will I when I see corrections from someone other than Franco on La Palabra del Día.

P.s. You may want to at least contact the site owners, if not your fellow Moderators, before putting forth new "rules" for everyone.

I agree.

The forum is for learning and teaching, not hashing out a difference of opinion in cultural or regional differences.

I´m confused by this. Is not "hashing out a difference of opinion" a learning process in the end?

Yes! And that's why we need a new thread if native speakers disagree on a post...we will all learn from this. - --Mariana--, Nov 24, 2012
If the learning process in the comments is useful and not damaging to members is what this is referring to. Discussions that are fruitfull are fine, it's when they are hurtful and offensive that the learning process becomes hindered on our forum. - bandit51jd, Nov 24, 2012

One thing is to post an answer that is culture-specific but perfectly fine in both cases (like "coche" versus "carro"), but another entirely different thing is to correct a grammatical mistake as if it were a grammatically sound construction; I saw that once here and I tried correcting it. But, if that's going to create drama and some sort of "territorial feud," then I'll leave. I was just trying to help. Thanks, anyway. grin

No, you didn't just correct O N E grammatical error...you ignored the instructions of the game and went about correcting anyway. You were notified to stop and you didn't, so you created the drama that required Moderator intervention. - --Mariana--, Nov 24, 2012
Oh, how dramatic! "If you don't want me I'll just leave....poor me." - Steve_Rivera, Nov 24, 2012
That's cool, Mariana. I'm sure that you will be able to detect the nuances and complexities of Spanish grammatical structure. I mean, you are a native Spanish speaker with extensive training in Spanish linguistics. ¡Buena suerte! ;-) - Avilescastilla, Nov 24, 2012
By the way, this whole "drama" is because you have a bunch of correctors and moderators that have no business teaching and/or correctin Spanish. It's sad to read all the mistakes I found that were allegedly "corrected." - Avilescastilla, Nov 24, 2012
We've seen your type on the forum before, Aviles...good luck to you! - --Mariana--, Nov 24, 2012
Yes. He was known by the many names he used to get onto this site. - ian-hill, Nov 24, 2012
Exactly, Ian, and his attitude is what made him so suspicious. - --Mariana--, Nov 24, 2012
