What's the difference between "tal vez" and "acaso"?

I was wondering about this today. From the SD dictionary, acaso is a lot more versatile in its uses than tal vez.

The word acaso seems to be a favorite for sayings like: por si acaso (just in case).

I think that few Spanish speakers would worry about which they use except for "por si acaso" which is not the same as plain "acaso". Obviously there are bound to be regional and even personal preferences but I think that they serve the same purpose.

I look forward to being put right if this is not so.

Note the regional uses and differences in meaning:

acaso.

(De caso).

  1. m. Casualidad, suceso imprevisto.

  2. adv. m. desus. Por casualidad, accidentalmente.

  3. adv. duda Quizá, tal vez.

  4. adv. neg. Ec. no (? indica la falta de lo significado por el verbo). Acaso he podido dormir.

por si ~.

  1. loc. adv. En previsión de una contingencia. Hay que salir con tiempo, por si acaso. U. t. c. loc. conjunt. Fíjate bien en lo que dicen, por si acaso hay que replicarles.

si ~.

  1. loc. conjunt. condic. U. para expresar la posibilidad o contingencia de lo manifestado por el verbo. Si acaso viene gente, yo aviso.

  2. loc. adv. En todo caso, a lo sumo. No he de demostrar nada a nadie; si acaso, a mí mismo.
