Here is how this works.

I post a headline and a some paragraphs from a Spanish-language newspaper. You read through it for comprehension. When you find a word that you don't know, (and I know that sometimes I cannot even make it through the headline) click on it or look it up in the translator or dictionary. Then, post that one word in Spanish and English, and the definition as your entry. You can post a picture if you like. Any words you provide definitions for, please highlight those words.

Everyone is welcome to participate, even beginners. Just jump in and find a word you don't know and post it and its translation. This Spanish comprehension is like one big puzzle, but if we take it one word at a time, we will win! The click on translator doesn't have every word, but when it works, it makes the process of figuring out what they are saying SO easy.

If enough people participate, we will have lots of tricky words and phrases spelled out for us, will add to our vocabularies, improve comprehension and be up to making light conversation on current events in Spanish at cocktail parties. That and the gift certificates I'll be giving out (not) should encourage your play.

**You can translate phrases or whole sentences if you like, just please highlight the vocabulary words in your sentence and give me a list at the end.

Today we are translating an article in Madrid's El Pais about Beatrice Potter's literary creation turning 110 years old. Have fun...

conejo - rabbit

dando tumbos - to give a jolt, with a jolt

la fecha - the date

Beatrix Potter's rabbit arrives at 110 years of age with a jolt.

The British celebrate the date with a version (of the story) by the actress Emma Thompson. Beascoa will edit (translate) the book (into the Spanish language) in Spain.

It's a little hard to figure out what is going on, so I researched on the web and found out a few more details...

"Emma Thompson celebrates 110 years of Peter Rabbit by giving us a brand-new tale!

Celebrate 110 years of Peter Rabbit with a new, original tale written by Oscar-winning actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson and based on the original tales by Beatrix Potter. In this story, Peter's adventures take him beyond the boundaries of Mr. McGregor's garden and all the way to Scotland! With 72 pages of beautiful text and illustrations, this hardcover picture book, which includes an audio CD of the story narrated by the author, is sure to become a classic--and a collector's item!"

Here is a link to her reading from her book (in English).

animar -- to encorage

la animaba -- encouraged her (over time)

rescribir -- to reply, to rewrite

In Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit, in reality the editor Frederick Warne encouraged her to rewrite her stories.

Is this related to "hamburguesa"? :) Maybe that's where the word comes from. Ham of the middle class. - JoyceM, Nov 18, 2012
From what I can tell, there is actually no relation. I think it's just coincidental. - rac1, Nov 18, 2012
