tampoco ( tam-poh'-koh )

adverb ( neither, nor, not ... either )

Francobollo is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

How to post a picture

1. A Ceciliana no le gusta el queso de cabra ni a mí tampoco.

Ceciliana does not like goat cheese and neither do I.

2. No me gusta ir al teatro ni tampoco me gusta ir al cine.

I don't like going to the theater nor do I like going to the movies.

No está diciendo que no entiende matemáticas. Tampoco que no sabe el resultado.

He is not saying that he does not understand maths. Neither that he knows the result.

The English word 'maths' is used in some English-speaking countries and in the U.S.A. you will hear only 'math'. These options look like my Spanish options in my personal translations. ;o) - katydew, Nov 18, 2012
Is that a typo on 'diendo'? Did you mean diciendo? or am I showing my ignorance of options again? - katydew, Nov 18, 2012
Buenos días, Iana! :)) - Noetol, Nov 18, 2012
Hola, Iana! Yes, math is used here in the U.S. Good one. - rac1, Nov 18, 2012
Gracias, amigas. I read that in British English it is maths. I will check it. But thanks for your suggestions. :)) I really appreciate your help with English and Spanish as well. Thanks a lot. :) Katy, yes, I meant "diciendo". A typing mistake. ;) - iana01, Nov 18, 2012
You can use maths. I was just saying that is how it is said in the U.S. - rac1, Nov 19, 2012

Yes, for sure British English, S'African/Zimbabwean/Kenyan English speakers use 'maths' as well. It was only information for you, Iana, since your English is on such a high level. - katydew, Nov 20, 2012

A veces la vida de soltero/a no es sencilla, pero tampoco es la vida en pareja.

Sometimes a single's life is not easy, but life with a partner isn't either.

The history of the world, has been written in blood,
A deadly Samurai sword, or a Russian-made Scud;
The purpose of a weapon is to take another man's life.

I know you don't want to die, neither do I;
But we know the truth, we can never deny;
That a man has to protect his children and wife.

We can't change our past, but we can learn our lesson;
From yesterday's story, if the mind's open to reason;
And let our children live, a life free from sadness and strife. enter image description here
Con la sangre ha sido escrita nuestra historia
Una espada de Samurái o un arma automática
Ambas se usan para destrozar la vida.

Sé bien que no quieres morir, y yo tampoco
En realidad, sabes bien que eres mi hermano
Los hijos de Palestina, un país sagrado y antiguo

Si pudiéramos abrir nuestros corazones y ojos
Si viéramos el futuro de nuestros hijas e hijos
No tendríamos esta sangre en nuestras manos.

"No le quieres á Juan" & why "those" apples and oranges? - geofc, Nov 18, 2012
Tengo dos dudas en este caso: Pienso que debería ser: " a Juan" (a sin acento), creo. Tengo una duda más: por qué "ni tampoco las naranjas" ? No es suficicente decir: ..tampoco las naranjas (sin ni )? Muchas gracias por expicaciones por adelantado, Franco - iana01, Nov 18, 2012

En mi opinión Chai ,es tampoco té ni café ,

¿No te gusta la frase geofc? yo tampoco .

Por lo tanto , esta frase por tu aprobación.

You do not like the phrase Geofc ? Me neither .

Therefore , this phrase is for your approval.

En mi opinión " chai " no es té ni café.

pero es muy popular.

In my opinion Chai is neither tea nor coffee,

but it is very popular.

I did not know that about "Tampoco " Geofc ,so that was great information , for which I am truly grateful, thanks mate.

Right on Ian , it is Chai, or Char , but in the west we have come to associate Chai , with a drink made with spices like Cinnamon , cardomon , and a few others , it is refered to as a tea, or chai , but I still like the old fashioned sweet black tea . - ray76, Nov 18, 2012
In India they make fantastic chai by pouring it from one glass to another , getting higher and higher , it makes it frothy and quite delightful. My favourite is Ginger tea (Chai) - ray76, Nov 18, 2012

Oops! sorry Ray but I don't like that sentence. In my Spanish world view, "tampoco" cannot precede a negative statement but is used to connect a second negative to the first (or more).

This gives me: "En mi opinión chai no es té. tampoco es café." In fact I wouldn't see a need for "tampoco" here at all: I would simply write "En mi opinión, chai no es té ni café." (ni chocolate come to that)

Comments from hispanohabladores??

Geofc, corrections are helpful but need to go in the comment section of the person's post or in a PM, most probably. - katydew, Nov 18, 2012
hispanohablantes o hispanoparlantes... / el chai no es ni té ni café tampoco is a perfectly fine sentence - francobollo, Nov 20, 2012
Hi Katy - sorry to disagree but corrections have their uses like disabusing folk who have taken the erroneous items as true. It's NOT personal, only grammatical. - geofc, Nov 20, 2012
I'm just saying if you put it under their comments section, it stays attached with the original post so we can see which one you are talking about. I didn't mean not to correct things. That is how we all learn. - katydew, Nov 20, 2012
