económico ( eh-koh-noh'-mee-koh )

adjective ( economical, economic )

Francobollo is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

How to post a picture

1. Te sale más económico comprar las cosas en los grandes almacenes que en las tiendas de departamento.

It is more economical to buy things at large warehouses than at department stores.

2. La crisis económica ha sido devastadora para muchas personas.

The economic crisis has been devastating for many people.

Es injusto, pero siempre habrá gente con más poder económico que otros ...
lo que es justo es que ninguno de nosotros puede comprar la felicidad.

It is unfair but there will always be people with more economic power than others ...
what is fair is that none of us can buy happiness.

Hay una gran diferencia entre lo barato y lo económico. Lo barato sale caro. Lo ecónomico te hace más eficiente.

There's a big difference between cheap and economical. You get what you pay for. Something economical, and yet not cheap, makes you more cost-effective.

In "Te sale más económico comprar las cosas etc" I don't understand the construction "Te sale". I guess the verb is either salirse or salarse, neither of which makes sense to me in this context. Gracias en anticipado.

Me encanta tu pregunta. From RAE: Dicho de una cosa que se compra: Importar, costar. Me sale a veinte pesetas el metro de paño. It's an idiom. No sense in finding an explanation. And it means to cost. - francobollo, Nov 13, 2012
Thanks Francobollo. Is the RAE sentence translated, "A meter of cloth costs me 20 pesetas". While the original sentence is translated, "It is a more economic cost to you to buy things in ..."? - rhrisch, Nov 13, 2012
Literally, your sentence says: "It costs you less (more economical) to buy things.." - francobollo, Nov 13, 2012
Hola, Rhrisch! - rac1, Nov 13, 2012
How do you use this construction to say "It cost's him"? Se sale, Le sale, or Lo sale? GIA. - rhrisch, Nov 13, 2012

It would be more economical to buy the bigger size from each item.

Sería más económico comprar el tamaño más grande de cada artículo.

There was a time in this city
When petrol was cheaper than water.
But now, they say, 'what a pity'
The economic climate is getting hotter.

There was a time in this country
When guys were lazy and haughty
But now it's not so, they have to try
To retain this emirate's beauty. enter image description here

En esta ciudad, había una época
Cuando la gasolina era más barata que el agua.
Pero ahora, dicen: 'qué lástima'
Va mal la situación económica.

En esta ciudad, había una época
Cuando la gente era perezosa y rica
Pero ahora no está así, hay que intentar
Conservar la belleza del Emirato de Dubái.
