Quedarse abismado. Do you know what it means?

First of all, the word abismo means abyss in Spanish.

Quedarse abismado is a very common Spanish phrase. Can you guess what it means and share it with the forum?

Here's an example of usage:

El huracán Sandy fue tan fuerte que hasta el gato se quedó abismado por las consecuencias de esta tragedia.

Hello.

This expression is used when a person is absorbed or thoughtful in an idea or situation.

Some synonyms are:

absorto abstraído caviloso ensimismado meditabundo (adj. Que piensa, medita o reflexiona en silencio. ) pasmado pensativo

Very nice, francobollo. My guess (and remember...just a guess) would be....

"....quedarse abismado por las consecuencias de esta tragedia." ....sounds like they..."remained humbled by consequences of this tragedy."

So, maybe...even the cat (who has nine lives) remained humbled by the consequences of this tragedy.

It's not humbled, Viejito. But nice try. - francobollo, Nov 11, 2012
Hi Franco, my dictionary says "humbled, cast down". Should I buy a bigger one? - geofc, Nov 11, 2012
Thanks, francobollo. It was a guess. I thought that it might have an idiomatic expression. I see that "gasomov" let us in on it. Thanks, gasimov....you too, francobollo. :) - viejito, Nov 12, 2012

Another go

"shocked" "stunned" "bemused"

Just noticed a "best answer" has already been chosen Ha

Is it that the cat was oblivious to the storm?

"El huracán Sandy fue tan fuerte que hasta el gato se quedó abismado por las consecuencias de esta tragedia."

Porque se utiliza la palabra "hasta" acá. ¿Significa "en cuanto" o "respecto"?

Sorprendido, tal vez. Pero no significa ni destrozado ni devastado. - francobollo, Nov 10, 2012

He sank into depression?? ( Into the abyss)

Worse than just being a bit under the weather, I think.

Puede ser por una razón positiva o negativa. En el caso del gato, la razón es obvia. - francobollo, Nov 10, 2012
