How bad is cagar?
In Spanish class, I was talking about cellphones with my teacher and I accidentally said 'cagar' instead of 'cargar' for the entire conversation and at the end she told me I shouldn't say 'cagar' as it's a swear word.
I looked it up on Spanish Dict and got the translation, but I want to know: how serious is it? Is is very insulting (like the n-word) or a word teenagers will commonly drop?

It´s not a terrible word, but it´s not the most delicate either. I would classify it a "street word." Don´t use it with your parents, etc. There are a few variations of it used as well and all may be heard among friends who commonly use street language.
Most people, even those who don´t commonly use street language, would have got a giggle hearing your mistake.

It is not as bad as the "n-word," but it is quite vulgar. I would save it for use when you are hanging out with your friends.
Cagar is means to sht and to screw up colloquially. But still if you don't know how someone would react it best not to use it. Just like shit some people might take offense while other may not. That is a common mistake among students because they either forget or cannot pronounce the r well.
Added to my list of words I need to know but not use. Thanks for asking about it. When learning a language, it's hard to distinguish and all the answers above give a very clear definition and gives me an ability to choose my words wisely.

Here we use evacuar instead of cagar to refer tot he bodily function.
