Why the -g in the 1st person present conjugation of salir ?
The verb salir goes a change in the first person singular present tense. Salgo, sales, sale. When and why was the -g added ?

There's a group of verbs that have this irregularity in their present tense conjunction and they are often called the 'go-go' verbs because the first person sing changes to ....go:
tengo, vengo, salgo etc
if you google go-go verbs you'll probably find a good article about it.
All the best!
It is probably hard to identify a reason but there are a number of verbs that are irregular in in the present tense yo form -
caer - yo caigo (to fall), hacer - hago (to do or make), poner - pongo (to put or set, to switch on), suponer - supongo (to suppose), traer - traigo (to bring or carry or wear), venir - vengo (to come)
There are several others and some of these have a different form of irregualarity such as conocer - conozco (to know of or be familiar or acquainted with), saber - yo sé (to know something factually)
There are a few irregulars like this that you just accept.
Many of these verbs end in ir, er.
But most of these are verbs you will use regularly and are irregular in other verb forms so memorize them. If you do this you'll have an easier time of it down the road.
