what about is very common in english e.g what about university?, what about the dog? etc. and i was wondering what the spanish equivalent is. the best i could come up with is:

  • Qué es lo que pasa con ..........?
  • ¿Qué hay de ..........?

are these right? or do you suggest something else.

thankyou in advance. and apologies for my bad english, i'm learning english too.

You are on the right track. What about sometimes means something as simple in Spanish as ¿Y? or ¿Y qué tal?

Examples.

What about Juan, is he coming to the party? / ¿Y Juan? ¿Viene a la fiesta?

What/How about these? / ¿Y qué tal estos?

Well, an easier way to say what about..? is ¿qué tal..?:

¿Qué tal tu vida? = ¿Qué hay de tu vida? = How's it going? (How's your life going?)
