Hi everyone, I have a question about saying " I like you" in Spanish. Is it " Me gustas" If so why in this case does the verb apply to the person you are talking about. Normally if you use the ending -as it would mean you dont like? Just a bit confused reallly.

Good question - the reason is that gustar doesn't really mean 'to like', it means 'to be pleasing'.

So for your example what you are really saying is:

me (to me) gustas (you are pleasing)

and this is the closest translation you can get to - 'I like you'

Ah thank you. This will be much clearer in my head now. So I see it as this now, me gustas= you are pleasing to me! - neiltheboo, Oct 22, 2012
