Assisting on Homework

I see a lot of "stuff" out there on the homework issue yet. Maybe it has always existed, maybe it will always be an issue.

Doing homework for somebody is unethical. I fully support the rules of this forum in not allowing that.

Helping with homework in which serious attempts have been made is perfectly acceptable. However, as a teacher, it would be really appropriate, on multiple choice especially, if the student would qualify as to why they chose that answer. I have plenty of students that will give me a guess, and if I don't say yes right away, they'll immediately switch to another answer. Sometimes this goes on until they've blurted out all four answers. I don't just tell them which one, or stop them when they accidentally hit the right one. I want to know why they think that. If I can't see why they think that, I can't see the point where their thinking goes off the correct path.

That said, I truly appreciate all the help everyone gives me and everyone else. Homework assistance is of great value for those that are really trying to learn. There are a lot of teachers out there that don't know their subject area very well. I'm one of them, unfortunately. I'm working diligently to correct this now that I've found an avenue. Thank you again!

Yeah, I agree that actual homework assistance is valuable. When it comes to it, many people don't let the other person think for themselves.. They just give them the answer..I'm glad that there's people like you who care to get better at helping students. - supernova82, Mar 13, 2013
