I was trying to invite my Spanish speaking friend to "a play" at a theater, but I only knew the verb "to play / jugar"

What is the word/words for a play at a theater? Thanks in advance!

Yeah, we don't have such a thing as "a play" (not in the way as a direct translation) because play = jugar (as you said).

You would have to say:

Obra de teatro.

So If you are inviting someone to a play:

¿Te gustaría/Quieres ir a ver una obra de teatro?
