In the word "nearest" in Spanish why is it pre fixed by "mas"

do you mean like
más cerca? meaning closer..
If you put the word "más" meaning "more" before an adjective it adds emphasis or in english ads the letters "er"
example:
black = negro blackER= más negro
cerca = close closer = más cerca
Sick = enfermo Sicker= más enfermo

Would it be improper to drop the pre-fix "más" and just use the word cerca?
Sure, if you want to say "close" or "near". However, you need the "más" if you want to say "closest" or "nearest."
Mi casa está cerca de la tienda. (My house is close to the store)
