Apresurarse can mean to hurry up but also to do things in haste. Precipitarse almost always means to do things in a hurry without carefully thinking.

Here are two sentences from my dictionary.

No te precipites a firmar el contrato.

Don’t rush into signing the contract.

Me apresuré a darles las gracias.

I hastened to thank them.
