Francobollo is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Mi apellido es de origen belga aunque mis ancestros provienen de Cataluña en España.

My last name is of Belgian origin even though my ancestors come from Catalonia in Spain.

2. En Latinoamérica se acostumbra usar los dos apellidos de una persona, o sea que el nombre tiene el apellido paterno y materno.

In Latin America it is customary to use both of a person's last names; that is, paternal and maternal last names.

Aún no sé escribir mi apellido, pero sé que quieren bañarme todos los días. No entiendo por qué. Yo preferiría probar mis nuevos juguetes. "¡Darte prisa, mamá, estoy muy ocupado!"

I do not know how to write my surname yet, but I know that they want to bath me every day. I do not understand why. I would prefer to try my new toys. "Hurry up, mom, I am very busy!"

Los apellidos comunes en el mundo hispano suelen acompañarse del segundo apellido para salirse del montón. Ejemplos: Pérez Arismendi, Rodriguez del Toro, García Bernal y López Miranda.

Very common last names in Spanish are usually followed by the person's mother's maiden name. That way they can stand out from the crowd. Examples: Pérez Arismendi, Rodriguez del Toro, García Bernal and López Miranda.

Los apellidos de los anglo - sajones muchas veces son de las ocupaciones, como Smith (Herrero) o Miller (Molinero).

Anglo-Saxon last names are many times from occupations, like Smith or Miller.

Mi apellido es "O'Connor" que significa "hijo de Connor". Hace muchos años, en el siglo 12, Connor era un rey de Irlanda.

Por desgracia no vivo en un castillo.

My surname is "O'Connor" which means "son of Connor". Many years ago, in the 12th century, Connor was a king of Ireland.

Unfortunately I don't live in a castle.

"¿Por favor, cuál es su apellido? Tengo que rellenar un formulario para usted y no sé su apellido.”

What is your last name please? I have to fill out a form and I don't know your last name.

Edit for corrections: Apellido was spelled incorrectly with a double consonant using "p". I'm so embarrassed over this one! It's not like I even had to look for the word.

It is confusing when I sign my last name in South America because they usually think my last name is my middle name.

- francobollo, Oct 10, 2012
Please include an English translation. Very nice! - rac1, Oct 10, 2012
I never use my mother's maiden name. It's not legally mandatory. I have friends who use both their parents's last names. But in my comment I meant to say that common last names in Spanish such as Pérez or Díaz always tag their mother's maiden name to,,, - francobollo, Oct 11, 2012
