Using the present tense
Spanish uses the present tense more than english does, but i often feel confused when exactly it should be used. For example, in english we make simple statements like "I'm going to the store. Do you want something?". Of course this translates to: "estoy iriendo al tienda. Quieres algo?". But i have the feeling that "Voy al tienda. Quieres algo?" is more natural. Am i on right track here?

Se usa el presente cuando quieres decir que algo va a pasar en el futuro pero lo quieres expresar usando el presente progresivo.
Por ejemplo: I am going to the store later= Voy (Iré) a la tienda luego.
and not...
"Estoy yendo a la tienda luego."
Yes, you are. English uses the progressive tenses more than Spanish. Voy a la tienda is clearly more used than Estoy yendo a la tienda. Both of them are grammatically correct, though.
