A mi entendimiento - 'rather than' es una conjunción y por eso puede ser seguido por básicamente cualquier cosa, mientras que 'instead of' es una preposición complejo-- y una preposición sólo se debería seguido por un sustantivo.

Por lo tanto, cuando en duda, usa "rather than"!

o y una cosita más, en inglés una palabra que termina con -ing (la que es la misma con un participio presente) - eg. 'looking', 'buying' etc puede funcionar como un sustantivo (en vez del infinitivo que usa español) - Kiwi-Girl, Oct 2, 2012

a veces sí son intercambiables, ?me puedes dar un ejemplo? Pero otra veces necesitaría cambiar la orden de las palabras - Por ejemplo: I would rather go to the movies than to the races. (verbo) I want to go to the movies instead of the races. (sustntv) - Kiwi-Girl, Oct 2, 2012

Otro ejemplo.

Preferiría ser rico. = I'd rather be rich.

En lugar de ser pobre. = Instead of being poor.

When interchangeable - cuando intercambio.

Instead of standing, sit down . =En vez de pie, siéntese.

Rather than stand , sit down . =En vez de pie, siéntese..

(En Inglés se dice "What is the difference?")

Generalmente "Rather" significa qué quiere hacer e.g. "Prefiero ir mañana - I prefer to go tomorrow." "Instead" significa qué necesita hacer. No pienso español ha la traducción exacto. Diría "En lugar de - in place of." e.g. "I will go instead of him - Iré en su lugar."

"Rather" y "Instead" son intercambiable a veces.

(Siento si mi español no es muy bueno - mi idoma primero es Inglés.)

Generally "Rather" means what you want to do. "Instead" means what you need to do. I don't think Spanish has an exact translation. You'd say "In place of."

"Rather" and "Instead" are interchangeable sometimes.
