Martin Luther objected most vigorously against the sale of indulgences by the Roman Catholic church in his 95 theses which he nailed to the Wittenberg Castle Church. Indulgences were statements of remission of suffering in Purgatory - a state of being for the immortal soul after death and before entry into heaven.

I realize that this is a bit eclectic relative to what is normally discussed in the forum, but the word indulgence associated with Martin Luther has a specific meaning.

There is a more common use of the word indulgence which can be found in any dictionary and is probably the first meaning given in a Spanish translation.

Welcome to the forum! I'm going to assume you are a Spanish speaker trying to learn English, so I will answer with that in mind. I'm not an expert on Martin Luther, but I believe this could be one of two things. "Something granted as a favor or privilege", or the more religious sense of "absence of worldly punishment for sins absolved by sacrament".

Please take a few moments to fill in your profile information. It makes answering much easier!
