When forming a sentence how do you know when to use the "el" or "la" for words?

Rather than go through a lengthy post, I'll direct you to this article . It should answer your question.

The first thing is it's not male or female, it's masculine or feminine. Nouns are one or the other.

Most nouns that end in "o" are masculine. Use "el" for "the".

Most nouns that end in "a" are feminine. Use "la" for "the".

Notable exceptions: la mano - the hand; la foto - the photo; el problema - the problem. Always make note of the gender (m - for masculine), (f - for feminine) when you learn a new noun.

So when you're forming a sentence, when do you use them? - peterbeatty, Sep 17, 2012
Use them when you want to say "the" for a singular noun. Follow the directions of rac1 and Noetol. Keep studying, you'll get it. - Jubilado, Sep 17, 2012
