Hi, great question.

A "chiste" is a story joke that you tell. "A man and a duck went into a bar and the duck said...." It has a punch line.

A "broma" is when someone tells you something and you say, "You're joking, right?" It's a silly comment, a practical joke, a way a speaking that means that you're not serious.

To complement what Mariana said, a broma can be a prank that you play on someone. "Me gastó una broma" means "He played a prank on me". Una broma de mal gusto or una broma pesada both mean a distasteful joke or prank.

Un chiste almost always means a joke or a funny story. Chistoso; however, can mean funny or amusing.
