Circumflex as an acute accent

Circumflex as an acute accent

This sounds really bizarre as a question, so I apologize. However, I was wondering if a circumflex can be used as an acute accent on an i. I was looking at a label written in Spanish (I can't remember exactly where) and instead of an acute accent on the letter ( í ), as I would expect, it had a circumflex ( î ). I am almost positive it was in Spanish, not French. Any ideas why this would be?

I would guess that it was a French word, as far as I know it isn't used in Spanish.

Here's the Wiki article about it.

To my knowledge, Spanish only uses 3 types of accent - the acute, the tilde and (very rarely) the diaresis.

It might have been a typo. I believe I've seen a Spanish word on a label or something with a circumflex on one of the vowels.

Okay, thank you. I was wondering if it might be an attempt to make it more obvious the í was accented, but it was probably just a typo - Maxwell_R, Sep 14, 2012
