Differece between "esto" and "este"

Question

I need a little bit explanation about when we use "esto" and "este". Whats the difference between these two and why we say "¿Qué es esto?", not "¿Qué es este?".

¿Qué es esto? - What is going on here?

¿Qué es este? - What is this(one)? (masculine noun)

¿Qué es esta? - What is this(one)? (feminine noun)

Esto(una situación) se va a poner feo. - This is going to get ugly.

Éste es mi perrito. - This is my puppy.

Ésta es mi flor. - This is my flower.

Esto es pronombre demonstrativo, neutro. No hay una traducción perfecta en ingles .Esto se refiere a hechos,acciones y se puede traducir:

ESTO = IT;THAT;THIS;THIS FACT; THIS ACTION

Esto no me interesa = I'm not interested in it / that

Esto es algo importante = It / That / This fact / This action is something important

Este es pronombre y adjetivo demonstrativo,masculino,singular:

ESTE = THIS; THAT

Este chico me molesta = This boy / That boy bothers me

¿QUé ES ESTO? podría semnificar:

-What is It?; What is that?

-What does that / it mean?

-What's up? / What' s going on?
