Compound Words / Palabras Compuestas

I majored in Spanish in college with very little Spanish instruction coming out of high school. One day, it hit me, compound words! (I may be slow, because I hadn't made this connection yet.) The word was "Nomeolvides". I hadn't progressed enough to see the word parts up until this point. However, I finally realized it was the flower Forget-Me-Nots. That lead to recognizing compound words such as "el parabrisas" (windshield), "el paraguas" (umbrella), and "el sacapuntas" (pencil sharpener). What other compound words are there that would be relevant to a Spanish learner? I'm looking for interesting words to add to my vocabulary knowledge and to share with students.

Hola,

  1. El sacacorchos (cork screw)
  2. El lavaplatos (dishwasher)
  3. El lanzallamas (flame thrower)
  4. La cazafortunas (the gold-digger)

I have attached an image I found online, which provides some nice examples.

Yes, I've never seen it put this way! I'm feeling undereducated from the years I spent in high school and college! So, is there no limit once you learn to manipulate, so to speak, the language? - rheit, Sep 6, 2012
