Bienvenido al foro abierto en SpanishDict.com. Hoy, mis compañeros de clase, vamos a aprender unos tiempos nuevos…y usarlos en frases.

Estos nuevos tiempos expresan acciones que tuvieron lugar en un tiempo indeterminado en el pasado

Ya sabemos que "Haber" es un verbo auxiliar, una como tal nunca puede estar solo.

Welcome to the open forum at SpanishDict.com. Today, my classmates, we are going to learn some new tenses…and use them in sentences.

These new tenses express actions that took place at an undetermined time in the past.

We already know that 'Haber' is an auxiliary verb, an as such can never stand alone.

Compund or perfect tenses are composed of two parts:

the auxiliary (haber-to have) + (a past participle )

They are called “perfect” because the action is completed . The function of the auxiliary verb “haber” is to tell “when”.

  1. Present Perfect Tense = have/has + Past Participle

(haber) + (Past Participle of Hablar ) = (….have/has spoken)

he + Past Participle = (I have……)

has + PP = (you [tú] have …)

ha + PP = (he, she, it – has ….)…

(you (Ud.) have….)

hemos + PP = (we have….)

haéis + PP = (you [vos] have ….)

han + PP = (they, you [Uds.] have ….)

*

  1. Past Perfect Tense = had + Past Participle

*

(haber) + (Past Participle of Hablar ) = (….had spoken)

había + Past Participle = (I had….)

habías + PP = (you [tú] )had….)

había + PP = (he, she, it had ….)

(you (Ud.) had….)

habíamos + PP = (we had….)

habíais + PP = (you [vos]) had….)

habían + PP = (they, you [Uds.] had….)

**

3 A. Future Perfect Tense = will/shall + Past Participle

**

(Haber) + (Past Participle of Hablar) = (…..will/shall have – ( spoken)

3.B {Future Perfect Tense can also be used to express conjecture }

As conjecture it means = (has probability /must have} + (Past Participle of Hablar )

                     ***Spoken***

habré + Past Participle =(I will/shall have….) or (I probably/must have….)

habrás + PP = (you [tú] )will/shall have…..) or (you probably/must have…..)

habrá + PP = (he, she, it will/shall have….) or (he,she,it probably has/must have…)

(you (Ud.) will/shall have ….) or (you (Ud..) probably/must have….)

habremos + PP = (we will/shall have….) or (we probably/must have….)

habréis + PP = (you [vos])will/shall have…) or (you probably/must have….)

habrán + PP = (they, you [Uds.] will/shall have…) or (probably/must have….)

4 A. Conditional Perfect Tense = (would have) + (past participle)

(Haber) + (Past Participle of Hablar ) = (…..would have – ( spoken)

**

4 B. {Conditional Perfect Tense can also be used to express conjecture}

**

As conjecture it means = (had probably) + (Past Participle of Hablar) =

                                          ***( spoken)***

Habría + Past Participle = (I would have….) or ( I had probably….)

Habrías + PP = (you [tú]would have….) or (you[tu] had probably…..)

Habría + PP = (he, she, it would have….) or (he,she,it had probably…..)

(you (Ud.) would have …..) or (you (Ud.) had probably…..)

habríamos + PP = (we would have…..) or ( we had probably…..)

habríais + PP = (you [vos])would have…) or (you (tu) had probably….)

habrían + PP = (they, you [Uds.] would have…) or (they, you,(Uds.) had probably….)

                                  **

The Subjunctive Moods.

**

5 . Present Perfect Subjunctive-

{(that) I, you{tú}, he, she, you, we, they (may have} + (Past Participle)

(que) - haya, hayas, haya, hayamos, hayáis, hayan

  1. Plueperfect (imperfect) Subjunctive –

{(that) I, you{tú}, he, she, you, we, they (might have} + (Past Participle)

I will give you a verb. You will have to select a “compound tense” from those that use "haber", and use it in a sentence with the past participle of the verb that will be chosen today.

Todays verb will be: ( Hablar – to speak - becomes ( spoken )

Use it in a “compound tense with “Haber ”

“ A conjugation of Haber ” + ( Past Participle of hablar – ( spoken )

If he had spoken to them, they would not leave.

Si hubiera hablado con ellos, ellos no saldrían.

Habremos comido diez dónutes antes de que tuviéramos ya tuvimos que parar.

Hola, Katy! :) - iana01, Sep 8, 2012
I probably would have gone with ,”Habremos comido diez dónutes antes de que tuviéramos que parar .” We wil have/shall have/(thus) must have…done something before and incomplete action about something we have to do… takes place.” - viejito, Sep 8, 2012
Just a suggestion/idea…worth a vote, ☺ - viejito, Sep 8, 2012
I forgot that it is supposed to be spoken... sorry. - katydew, Sep 9, 2012

I think that the key here is to remember that “de” can be (of, from, about). In Enlish, when we say “of” someone, we are in essence saying “about someone. So, I probably would have said, “habían hablado de si mismos usando…” Just an idea and worth a vote - viejito, Sep 6, 2012
I hope I can remember this, it's excellent information! I think I understand the use of "about". I have another question though. - bandit51jd, Sep 6, 2012
The phrase "si mismos usando" does it convey the meaning of "each other". Drat, another typo. I need to remove the either. - bandit51jd, Sep 6, 2012
I hope I'm not asking too many questions Viejito! Just let me know if I am! - bandit51jd, Sep 6, 2012
A friend can always ask a friend a question. Some sentences can’t be literally translated verbatim, so we find common ground. “ about each other using praises and many…” ☺ - viejito, Sep 7, 2012
Muchas gracias, Viejito! - bandit51jd, Sep 8, 2012

No había hablado con mi padre durante algunas semanas cuando me llamó por teléfono de Europa. ¡Aún no sabía que estaba allí!

I had not talked to my father in several weeks when he called me on the telephone from Europe. I did not even know he was there!

Because “durante” has such close ties with “during”…Le secribí durante las vacaciones. (I wrote to him during the vacations), “Durante toda la semana.” ( all week..i.e. during the whole week )…. - viejito, Sep 7, 2012
I probably would have worded it… ‘Yo no había hablado con mi padre por unas semanas cuando él me llamó por teléfono de Europa.”…just an idea/opinion…worth a vote…☺ - viejito, Sep 7, 2012
Thanks for the feedback. - LaBurra, Sep 8, 2012
