Hola, y bienvenido al foro abiert de Español en SpanishDict.com. Hello, and welcome to the open forum at SpanishDict.com

As you already know, English has 7 tenses and Spanish has 13.

Today we will examine the preterite and imperfect Spanish tenses.

I will select the verb that we will use.

I will tell you its verb meaning…in general.

I will also give you the verbs conjugations.

You will need to select one of the conjugations and use it in a sentence.

Example : “ Tener ”- ‘to have ‘ - Tuvo que ir. ( He had to go)

Please answer in Spanish and English. Please use ‘clip art” if you have it.

And please…enjoy yourself.

Como ya lo sabes, el inglés tiene 7 tiempos y español tiene 13.

Hoy examinaremos los tiempos pretérito e imperfecto de español.

Seleccionaré el verbo que utilizaremos.

Les diré la significación del verbo…por lo general.

También les daré las conjugaciones del verbo.

Tendrán que seleccionar una de las conjugaciones y utilizarla en una frase.

Por ejemplo : “to have ” – ‘ Tener ‘ - He had to go. ( Tuvo que ir )

Por favor conteste en español y en inglés. Por favor use ‘el arte de clip” si usted lo tiene. Y por favor … ¡ diviértanse!

El verbo será ; “to have ” ‘ Tener ‘

The verb will be ; “ Tener ” ‘ to have ‘

El preterito –

tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvisteis, tuvieron

El imperfecto –

Escríbamela en inglés y español...por favor. Write it for me in English and Spanish please.

¡Incluyan caudros/dibujos…cuando los prefieran! Include pictures/drawings…when you prefer them!

They had party last Saturday.

Tuvieron la fiesta el último sábado.

They had a 30 minute lunch break every day at work.

Tenían 30 minutos de hora de comer cada dia en el trabajo.

I probably would have said, “Tuvieron una fiesta el sábado pasado. Tenían un almuerzo de 30 minutos cada día en el trabajo.” Just ideas, Thanks, Worth the vote. ☺ - viejito, Sep 4, 2012

When we think of the word bite or sting in Spanish, “ Morder” is used for human and animales…and “picar” is used for snakes and insects. I would have said, Cuando la abeja me picó … Just a suggestion. Worth the vote, Thanks. - viejito, Sep 4, 2012

Teníamos que ir a la escuela, pero nos despertamos demasiado tarde.

We were supposed to go to school, but we woke up too late.

Thanks viejito. I wasn't quite sure if the "supposed to" expressed by "tener que" would work. I guess I could also have said "Estábamos supuestos a ir...." - BradyLabuda, Sep 3, 2012
Since you’ve introduced supposition (supposed to) into your sentence..I might have said, “Se suponía que tuviéramos que ir a la escuela, pero nos despertamos demasiado tarde.” Just an idea / suggestion. Worth the vote ☺ - viejito, Sep 3, 2012
Suppose to…is more like we received an indirect command…so, since this demand took place in the past…I opted for an “imperfect subjunctive” Remember..these are just suggestions. ☺ - viejito, Sep 3, 2012
