"Hola" is a greeting and, say, "Buenas dias" is a greeting. Why is "hola" combined with other greetings like "buenas tardes" or "buenas noches" in lesson 1.1?

Hi Oldpencil -- Buenos días. Buenas tardes and buenas noches. Welcome! - francobollo, Sep 3, 2012

Yes, but I also saw examples people just saying "hola" or just "buenas tardes" in a Spanish textbook so I wonder why is it different here.

Usually it's best to just realize that not all customs or sayings are going to be translated exactly the same in another language and culture.

There are a lot of things you just have to think, "ok, this is just how it's done here" or "this is just how it's said in Spanish" rather than trying to make it fit into an English language pattern.
