Is "que tal" a complete synonym of the "Como esta"? Is "que tal" a colloquial expression, or used only among young people? Is it used as a greeting as its English translation? How to use this question correctly?

¿Qué tal? is a very common expression and is less formal than ¿Cómo estás?. It means"How is it going?" There's no specific age group tied to it.

Meanings could be.

  • What do you think. ''Que tal si vamos al cine?''

or

  • What about if?. ''Que tal si vamos a la tienda en vez de eso?''

or

  • How are you?. ''Que tal?'' , ''Que tal estas?''

or

Old pencil, welcome to the forum!

"Que" means "What." "tal" means "such." "Que tal," means "What's up?"

It's not a phrase that you can literally translate and understand, but you should know it, as you will hear it all of the time.

"Que tal," is a common greeting among friends, less formal than, "¿Cómo estás?" (How are you?).

p.s. Please post your country of origin and fluency levels in your profile so that we know a little more about you.
