when to use chico/chica and muchacha/muchacho

Do chico and muchacho have approximately the same meaning? If so in which stances these words are used, or to what age group do they apply? Is one word colloquial and the other official?
I have same questions regarding the use of chica/muchacha.

Yes. Variations are country-specific. Spaniards and Argentinians tend to use more chico/chica than muchacho/muchacha. A real distinction though is that the word chica/chico can also refer to a young lady o a young man. Muchacho/a usually (not always, but most of the time) refer to children or teenagers.

In Mexico there is also chamaco/a. The spelling may be wrong but the "ch" is like in church.
