I know this must be one of the areas in which the most questions are asked but I have not been able to find a clear answer on this. When expressing how much was paid for something, is por or para used? For example, "Pagué cinco dólares (por o para) esta camiseta." I think it is por but I have not been able to find confirmation of this.

It's always "por" in an exchange of money, goods, etc.
Pagué cinco pesos por esto.
Cuesta dos pesos por uno.
Also, look at giving thanks as an exchange for something someone did for you, because it's always "por" as well--
