Excuse me... I'm wondering about one thing, I would like to ask you about the essence of learning the Spanish language where in fact I'm an English major student? Does it help me in the future?

Why learn Spanish?

  • With 329 million native speakers, Spanish ranks as the world's No. 2 language in terms of how many people speak it as their first language. It is slightly ahead of English (328 million) but far behind Chinese (1.2 billion).

  • Spanish has at least 3 million native speakers each in 44 countries, making it the fourth mostly geographically widely spoken language behind English (112 countries), French (60) and Arabic (57).

  • Learning Spanish is easier for English speakers because it has over 4000 cognates.

  • You can make lots of friends outside your "normal" or "ordinary" peer group.

  • It exercises your brain.

  • It's fun!

Since beginning to learn Spanish, I have realized that a person's language is the true expression of what they are. It defines the way that we think, love, and live. There is nothing more beautiful than the understanding of others that you gain by learning their language.

One thing always sticks in my mind. I saw Carlos Santana being interviewed about his music. He was talking about the masculine and the feminine that he brought together with each piece that he writes. An English speaker would never think of it this way because our language is not a romance language. To me, this shows how language personifies who we are and how we perceive the world.

As an English Major, Spanish will be invaluable to you.

The differences in Spanish grammar and syntax will help highlight how English is constructed. Learning another language is likely to make your English more precise, which should help boost your grades.

Of course, any language (preferably from a non-Germanic root) will do this - but Spanish has the added advantage of number of speakers - and I would guess is easier to learn than Mandarin!

To Know another language is to see another view; to understand the world better. Language is the tool we use to exchange information and to learn from each other. Every language has it own idiomatic phrases, subtle word meanings and grammatical rules. Example: the difference between para and por in Spanish and how important it is to use these words complexly.. There are some languages which do not have the concept of the past and the future. I would imagine it would be very necessary for an English major to study other languages to appreciate other ways other languages describe the world around us.
