Hello everyone. I think phrasal verbs are some of the most difficult to many English learners because most of them do not have a literal translation. So I have decided to learn one or two phrasal verbs every day.

I know you can help me with that, but you also need to learn Spanish, so please write the sentence in English using the PV then try it in Spanish. Then I will correct your sentence (the Spanish sentence, of course); we will help each other out.

If you´re not sure about how to translate your sentence, just explain (in English) what your Pv means and I will help with your translation.

Today let's write sentences using the phrasal verb:

"Hold up"

1.-Definition (hold sth up as sth): to use someone or something as an example of something, especially something very good.

Examples:

•Many who have been held up as moral examples have had stunning falls from grace.

•Many would hold up Will Rogers as am example of patriotic American dissent.

•Sweden is often held up as an example of a successful social democracy.

2.-Definition(hold sb/sth up): to stop; to delay.

Examples:

•Traffic was held up for several hours by the accident.

•I made it on time for the appointment, but I was held up an extra half hour filling out forms.

3.-Definition(hold sb/sth up): to rob, especially using a weapon, to steal from someone using violence or the threat of violence.

Examples:

•The robber got 20 years in prison for the violent hold up of the video store.

•She was hurt during the hold up when the robber pushed her to the ground.

•His plans to hold up the flower shop failed when they closed early for the day.

4.-Definition: raise; lift to a higher-than-normal position.

Examples:

•I need you to hold up the other end of this banner so I can pin it on the wall.

•They made a plan to hold up the bank and run with the money.

•You’ll hold up the line if you stop to tie your shoes now.

Las personas que hacían cola no estaban feliz. El hombre al mostrador que estaba en el mostrador estaba retrasando la fila por discutir sobre la eliminación de su bebida favorita.

The people in line were not happy. The man at the counter was holding up the line by arguing about the removal of his favorite drink.
