Hello everyone. I think phrasal verbs are some of the most difficult to many English learners because most of them do not have a literal translation. So I have decided to learn one or two phrasal verbs every day.

I know you can help me with that, but you also need to learn Spanish, so please write the sentence in English using the PV then try it in Spanish. Then I will correct your sentence (the Spanish sentence, of course); we will help each other out.

If you´re not sure about how to translate your sentence, just explain (in English) what your Pv means and I will help with your translation.

Today let's write sentences using the phrasal verb:

"Hold on"

1.-Definition: to wait (especially on the telephone)

Examples:

I hate that canned music they play on the phone while you have to hold on. The operator asked me to hold on while she searched for the number. You shouldn’t have to hold on the phone for more than 5 minutes before bing helped.

2.-Definition: to hold something or someone firmly with your hands or arms.

Example:

She held on tightly to his waist.

3.-Definition(hold on/tight): to make yourself continue to do what you are doing or stay where you are although it is difficult or unpleasant.

Example:

If you can just hold on I'll go and get some help.

4.-Definition(hold onto/on to sth): to keep something you have.

Examples:

Hold on to your ticket - you'll need it later.

Lewis held onto the lead until the final lap.

Hold on a second while I get my breath back.

Espera un momento mientras recobro el aliento.

She's on the other line at the moment. Would you like to hold on?

En este momento está hablando por la otra línea. ¿Quiere usted esperar?

You can't hold on to someone if they want to leave. You just have to let them go.

No puedes retener a alguien que se quiera marchar. Tienes que dejarlo ir.

Sé que seguir a Jesús es difícil, pero prosiga porque vale la pena.

Mi instructora insiste en que no me aferre al cuerno de la silla, a menos que , por supuesto, me esté estoy cayendo. Ella dice que eso puede mostrar una falta de confianza para el caballo.

My instructor insists that I do not hold on to the saddle horn, unless of course I'm falling. She says it can convey a lack of confidence to the horse.

WEIRDO: Recommendations -- recomendar, sugerir, aconsejar, ordenar, mandar, insistir, etc.

I tried to use the subjunctive. Did I follow Recommendations properly?

Also, is this a good way to translate "saddle horn"?

Use a neckstrap and decent European saddle without any horns, unless you're going to use a lasso. - annierats, Aug 19, 2012
Or teh mane. Sirve bien, we are nearer the horses than in those armchair saddles of yours. - annierats, Aug 19, 2012

My attempt: "Hold on"

-- 1. Odio que la música grabada que juegan suena en el teléfono mientras que tienes que esperar. La operadora me pidió que esperara esperarse mientras buscaba el número. No debería tener que esperar en el teléfono por más de cinco minutos antes de ser ayudado.

-- 2. Ella se agarró con fuerza a su cintura.

-- 3.- Si puedes aguantar que iré a buscar ayuda.

-- 4a. Agarra tu boleto, lo necesitará más adelante.
-- 4b. Lewis se aferró a la ventaja hasta la última vuelta.
