Why the spelling change while we conjucate the words like querer

'Conjugate': necessary because by conjugating verbs like querer, we show who (I, You, He, We, They) is doing the action and when (past, present, future, etc.) it is happening.
In English, we add an 'I' to want.. not so in Spanish.. they change the whole word. Changing to whole word, is conjugation.
