Third person verbs.

I'm confused. If the first person singular for vivir is vivo, I understand why you can say "vivo en Francia" because the verb says you are talking about yo. However, in the lessons I hear things such as

Habla español. Comen manzanas. Vive en China. Viven en Brasil.

How do you know whether these refer to usted, ella or él (for singular) or to ustedes, ellos or ellas (for plural)? I don't understand why it's not necessary to put the pronoun.

¡Gracias!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It ALL depends on context.

If you're talking about Jose and then you say, "Habla español" we know that you mean that Jose speaks Spanish.

If I'm talking about a group of girls and say, "Comen manzanas" you know that I'm talking about them, plural.

When I've been using "usted" during our conversation and then ask "¿Vive en China?" the person would guess by context that you were talking about them..

I hadn't thought of the whole conversation taking place. Makes sense. ¡Gracias! - Zacx, Aug 10, 2012
