preterite and past?
What is the difference between preterite and past?

The preterit is a "past" tense. In Spanish, we have two past tenses, the preterit and the imperfect. Although this topic is too broad to be correctly explained in a post, you can look at our reference articles.
Brady is correct--this is a complex subject that you need to study (see links below to SpanishDict lessons).

Spanish has many versions of the past but the 1) preterit 2) imperfect in Spanish are the first main forms to learn--
The preterit is used to describe actions completed at one point in the past or that lasted a specific amount of time in the past and are now completed.
The imperfect is used mainly to describe past habitual actions or to set the scene in the past, what a person used to do or was doing.
