Here is the sentence.

"Puedo hacer mejor que lo que hago en la agencia de viajes ahora."

I can translate it if I skip over "lo" Can you tell me why "lo" is there?

"Puedo hacer mejor que lo que hago en la agencia de viajes ahora."

I can do better than (that which/what) I do in the travel agency now.'

Lo in this particular case does not stand alone as any singular meaning.

What you are really focusing on is “lo que”. It means- (which, what, that which)...and is a "Relative Pronoun"

Lo que hago – that which I do (whatever it is). The Lo is a nueter object pronoun because the idea of whatever is not gender specific.

Hope this helps?
