Today write sentences with "get across"

Hello everyone. I think phrasal verbs are some of the most difficult to many English learners because most of them do not have a literal translation. So I have decided to learn one or two phrasal verbs every day.

I know you can help me with that, but you also need to learn Spanish, so please write the sentence in English using the PV then try it in Spanish. Then I will correct your sentence (the Spanish sentence, of course); we will help each other out.

If you´re not sure about how to translate your sentence, just explain (in English) what your Pv means and I will help with your translation.

Today let's write sentences using the phrasal verb:

"Get across"

Quería atravesar el puente, pero se había derrumbado.

I wanted to get across the bridge, but it had collapsed.

I think you wanted to say "but" instead of "bit". - luisssito, Aug 1, 2012
Thanks, Luís! Darn typo! :)) - Noetol, Aug 1, 2012
This was long ago - the Tacoma Narrows bridge. - Noetol, Aug 1, 2012
derrumbar - to collapse, to knock down, demolish, overthrow -- El verbo bueno saberlo. Muchas gracias, Noetol! - bandit51jd, Aug 1, 2012

Really, Luissito, how can I get it across to you that if you want all these answers of mine, then you must go and write an answer on my 'Olympic Sport' game!

Pues, Luissito, cómo puedo explicarte que si quierestodas estas respuestas mías, entonces debes ir y hacer una respuesta en mi juego de los deportes olímpicos.

Remember when you use "voy a" is future, in this case it is present continous ( I`m not having). - luisssito, Aug 1, 2012

El venado estaba tratando de cruzar la calle cuando le pilló un coche.

¡Qué horror!

The deer was trying to get across the street when he was hit by a car.

Hola Maldito! I think it's "por un coche". I'm not the best at por vs. para though! - bandit51jd, Aug 1, 2012
Thanks for the heads up. I am still really green when it comes to por/para. I lifted the "he was hit by a car" phrase from the pillar entry, but I can check with a native speaker just to be sure that is how it is said. - Maldito23, Aug 1, 2012
In the way how you wrote your sentence is ok (if you want to use "por" you have to change the estructure of the sentence). - luisssito, Aug 2, 2012
El venado estaba tratando de cruzar la calle cuando fue atropellado(it´s more common than pillar) "por" un coche. - luisssito, Aug 2, 2012
Gracias por su ayuda, luisssito. :) - Maldito23, Aug 2, 2012

How can we get across the river without getting wet, when there is no bridge?

¿Como podemos cruzar el rio sin mojarnos cuando no hay ningún puente?
