arriesgar (ah-rree-es-garr')

verb ( risk )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. No me voy a arriesgar a saltar en paracaídas.

I won't take a risk and go skydiving.

2. Bomberos arriesgan sus vidas para salvar a las personas en peligro.

Firefighters risk their lives to save people in danger.

Some people risk irrationally. Isn´t it better to stand firmly on solid ground and have as much fun as possible? ; ))

Algunas personas se arriesgan irracionalmente. ¿No es mejor estar de pie firmemente en la tierra sólida y divertirse si es posible?

"personas se arriesgan" (uso reflexivo del verbo "arriesgar" -> "arriesgarse"), "estar de pie". +) - -cae-, Jul 30, 2012
Gracias, Caefuego. :)) - iana01, Jul 30, 2012
Caefuego, pero por qué tengo que usar el verbo reflexivo: arriesgarse? Por qué no solamente: arriesgar = to risk. ? Si vengas aquí otra vez, puedes explicarme la diferencia, por favor? Gracias. Que tengas un buen día, Caefuego. :) - iana01, Jul 30, 2012
Iana, in English, you could think of "people risk themselves irrationally". That is why the reflexive is used. - Noetol, Jul 30, 2012
Thank you, Noetol, for explanation. Ahora comprendo. Muchas gracias. :)) - iana01, Jul 30, 2012

Cuando pone en riesgo su propia integridad o la de un grupo de personas, incluido uno mismo, debe usar el verbo en forma reflexiva. Cuando se pone en riesgo algo ajeno al propio cuerpo, se usa "arriesgar". - -cae-, Jul 30, 2012
Could you please explain what you mean? - annierats, Jul 30, 2012

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If Columbus had not ventured to cross the Atlantic, President Obama wouldn't rule the USA today. / El que no se arriesga no pasa la mar. Si Cristóbal Colón no se hubiera atrevido a cruzar el Atlántico, el presidente Obama no gobernaría los Estados Unidos hoy.

Quiero arriesgarme a perder lo que conozco (excepto mi familia y mis amigos) para obtener más ricas experiencias. El problema es que tengo miedo de hacer esto.

I want to risk losing what is familiar (except my family and friends) in order to gain richer experiences. The problem is that I'm afraid to do this.

I deeply respect the profession of sappers. They know that they risk their lives to one hundred percent, but the sappers still do their job. Not everyone was born for this job.
