Practice not being too literal # 29

Practice not being too literal # 29

As my title says, I am trying to learn to not be literal in translations, so every day I will post a saying in English and ask for suggestions as to how to convey the thought in Spanish. At the end of the day, I will pick the answer that I think most accurately reflects the idea, and I will choose it as best answer for 20 points to the respondent.

The last response was wonderful! Everyone keep up the good work!

Today's phrase is, "chip off the old block"

Good luck!

Since "chip off the old block" was originally meant to describe a commonality between father and son you could say:

El es exactamente igual que su padre.

He is exactly like his father.

Although not exactly the same, however, "from little acorns great oaks grow".

The little acorns refers to the chip.

The great oak is the image of the father.

"De bellotitas crecen robles grandes", es una frase parecida.

Las bellotitas significan el hijo.

Las robles significan la imagen del padre.

Beacause the apple doesn't fall far from the pear-tree they both have a chip on their shoulders.

Sorry, this may not translate too well and will only be understood in England.

La manzana nunca cae muy lejos del árbol, ambos se sienten resentidos. .

Like father like son. Como padre, como hijo.

A similar adage in English is "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

Un adagio similar en inglés es "La manzana no cae lejos del manzano. ".
