Overwhelming
I have seen so many words translated into English as "overwhelming," that I never know which word to use. Examples: abrumador, aplastante, ogobiante, apabullante, avasallante...
So if I want to say that sometimes studying Spanish is overwhelming (in the sense of it being too difficult), could I say "A veces el estudiar español es ogobiante/ apabullante/ abrumador? If so, would it all mean the same thing?
Here's a sentence that I came across in a magazine article about a famous singer, Celia Cruz: "El estilo desinhibido, fiestero y avasallante de Celia hipnotizó y fanatizó a muchos." In this sentence from the magazine Think Spanish, the word avasallante is translated as overwhelming. In the dictionary, avasallante is overwhelming in the sense of dominating someone, being far superior to an opponent or subjugating a population. I don't think of a musical style as being overwhelming at all, so I had trouble understanding the meaning here.
I'm finding that understanding overwhelming is overwhelming.
